Kate Downie
The screenprint 'The Quarry Path' (above) was hand printed with the materials which Kate was painting with at the time and which were really fascinating her. Her three key materials were very different from each other and each has a strong character. One was a dense almost shiny smooth black Chinese ink, the other a dusky complex dry mixture of fine chalk dust from the bottom of Kate's chalk' box and the third was pure fine translucent watercolour. Carol began researching how to use these media for screenprinting. She found some ways of making all of these media into screenprinting mixtures by combining them with Lascaux painting media and other media. Kate the painted a set of autographic positives using Lacaux Tusches combined with carborundum and these images were exposed onto screens and printed with the mixtures.
